Chernomorsky Shipbuilding Yard Builds Fourth Ship for Damen Shipyards Bergum

21.08.2012

Chernomorsky Shipbuilding Yard (ChSY, Nikolaev, Ukraine) has completed the construction of the hull for the fourth universal vessel of CF3850 design and has turned it over to the representatives of the Dutch company Damen Shipyards Bergum.

The ship is designed for the transportation of dry cargoes and containers. ChSY has built (70% ready) a hull outfitted with the vessel systems and mechanisms to the maximum extent as per the contract, including the foundations, ramps, ballast and fuel systems, fire and air mains. The design of the container carrier bulkhead has been substantially modified if compared to the previous series commissions. Furthermore, the shipyard's specialists have installed the lateral thrust unit and the rudder propeller unit and have completed insulation and cladding of the vessel's interior spaces. According to the classification project, the ship's hull is fitted out with the removable tween decks and grain bulkheads. Apart from that, backup diesel generators were installed.

'The global market trends today are such that there is a need for this type of vessels. The container carrier design CF 3850 is quite popular among the European ship owners, and we have successfully asserted our position in this niche. We are happy that we have completed the construction of the fourth ship despite the current problems challenging the Ukrainian shipbuilding industry. We are currently negotiating the construction of the fifth vessel for our Dutch partners. We hope that high quality of the shipyard's works will secure an opportunity for us to undertake complete construction of CF 3850 series ships,' said Valeriy Kalashnikov, the General Director of Chernomorsky Shipbuilding Yard.

To recap, the first CF 3850 design vessel commissioned by Damen Shipyards Bergum was floated out in 2010. In January 2012, Chernomorsky Shipbuilding Yard signed two new contracts with Damen Shipyards Bergum for the construction of two new CF 3850 design container carriers. Today, the shipyard is floating out the fourth ship and is building the fifth container carrier.

The design speed of container carriers is 12.3 knots and the maximum capacity is 193 container carriers of 20 TEU type. The hull weight is 1,000 tonnes. The vessel's length is 88.6 metres, width 12.5 metres, hull height 7 metres, deadweight 3.800 tonnes, and water-draught 5.4 metres.
